Since June 21, 2020, the reforms to the COIP (Comprehensive Organic Penal Code), entered into force and application. This legal instrument has, in total, 127 reforms that include new classifications of crimes and contraventions, among them, those that are against of animals.
With the new regulations, animal abuse may be punished with a custodial sentence of between six months to one year. If the death of the animal is caused, the penalty increases from one to three years in prison. Zoophilia is also punishable by imprisonment for six months to a year that can increase up to three years if the animal dies.
Regarding violations, now the abandonment of companion animals is sanctioned with 20 to 50 hours of community work, likewise animal abuse without causing injury or death will be sanctioned with community work of 50 to 100 hours.
